This is a story of friendship and vision of one of our members. Mary Baker is a creative stitcher that loves to try anything involved with fiber, sewing and color. Until recently she hadn’t thought about teaching sewing. Then an idea popped into her head one day. A young neighbor that she had known since she was born was showing a great interest in Mary’s sewing projects. Mary asked her if she would like to learn to sew and Clare, age 9, replied with an enthusiastic “YES!”

The next meeting of ASG that Mary attended she was telling us about her young friend’s interest and through conversation learned that the chapter had a sewing machine Clare could borrow. The rest is history so they say and stitching began.

In the photos (below) you see Clare with her small hanging, notice the precisely matched corners of her blocks. The larger hanging Clare did for her grandmother for Christmas! Mary commented that young Clare excelled at being focused on her work and following directions.

Recently Clare attended an ASG meeting with Mary to meet members and to see some of our projects during “SEW and TELL” time. I had the opportunity to ask her what she thought about sewing. Her first comment was “Well, it is time consuming.” Then I asked if she was going to continue on sewing; “yes I will” Claire said. I would like to try making a skirt and the striped tee shirt shown tonight was really cool!”

Isn’t this a great way to carry out our mission statement!? Kudos to Mary and to Clare, let’s hope they both continue their love of sewing!
